Accident lawyer for expats and tourists in Thailand

An English-speaking Thai law firm in Bangkok that handles the police, insurers, and courts for foreigners hurt in road accidents, including after you've left Thailand.

Being hurt in a road accident is hard anywhere. In Thailand, foreigners face extra problems: the police report is written in Thai, fault is often negotiated at the roadside or the police station, and insurers know that visitors may leave before pursuing a claim. Law Studios Thailand is a Bangkok law firm that represents injured expats and tourists, in English, from the first police visit to the final settlement.

Why foreigners need a local lawyer after an accident

  • Language. Statements, police reports, and settlement papers are in Thai. Signing something you can't read can cost you your claim.
  • Fault is decided early. Police often record who was at fault on the day, and that record shapes every insurance claim that follows.
  • Low first offers. Insurers and drivers may offer a quick cash payment in exchange for a signed release. Once signed, it is hard to claim more.
  • Deadlines. Por Ror Bor claims generally must be made within 180 days, and civil claims for wrongful acts generally within one year (Civil and Commercial Code, section 448).
  • Distance. If you have gone home, someone needs to deal with the police, the hospital, and the insurers in Thailand for you.

How we help injured expats and tourists

  • Attend the police station with you, interpret, and review your statement before you sign.
  • Collect evidence: the police report, CCTV, dashcam footage, witness details, and medical records.
  • Claim under Por Ror Bor compulsory insurance and against the at-fault driver's insurer.
  • Negotiate with insurers, and represent you at police or court mediation.
  • File a claim in a Thai court if a fair settlement is not offered.
  • Translate and certify documents for your travel insurer, employer, or embassy.
  • Help keep your visa and work permit in order while your case or treatment keeps you in Thailand.

Common questions

Can a foreigner sue for compensation in Thailand?

Yes. Foreigners have the same right as Thai nationals to claim compensation for injuries caused by someone else's wrongful act, and to bring a case in a Thai court.

I didn't have a Thai driver's license. Can I still claim?

Possibly. If you were the one driving, not having a valid Thai license or International Driving Permit can count against you on fault and with insurers. If you were a passenger or pedestrian, it usually doesn't matter. Talk to us before you give up on a claim.

My travel insurance paid my hospital bill. Can I still claim from the other driver?

Often yes, for losses your travel insurance didn't cover, such as lost income and pain and suffering. Your travel insurer may also want to recover what it paid. We coordinate both.

Do I need to stay in Thailand while my case runs?

Not usually. Many cases settle through negotiation or mediation. If you must give evidence in court, we will tell you in advance.

Injured, and the insurer won't pay fairly?

Tell us what happened. We reply within one business day, in English or Thai.
